Dear friends at Amazee

November 27, 2008

As you can see from the pictures below I’m having a really great time here in San Francisco. The hotel on the Alcatraz island you sent me to is wonderful, I even have a bed!

Alcatraz

In the picture you can see my room as well as the hotel’s private beach. The concierge told me that it’s really save to swim there and that all these typical shark fins belong to a special kind of goldfish living in these waters. Phew! I already thought it was dangerous to swim there. Haha, goldfish, cute!

Looking forward to seeing you soon again!

The order is rapidly fading

Just about to finish a book? Let me recommend your next offline reading: Causewired by Tom Watson. A great documentation of the nascent online movement that is using the internet as a force for social change. In Tom Watson’s words the goal of the book is: „ …to convince you that rapid advances in media and technology, in the ways people communicate, are changing how people support causes and how we respond to that underlying human impulse to help others, improve our communities, and change the world.“ or in Greg’s words "A must read for tomorrows online leaders! Ah, yes and never judge a book by it’s cover…". This way to Amazon, this way to the causewired blog.

Web Monday is a roller coaster

November 25, 2008

Yesterday we met for the 4th Web Monday at doodle‘s office to embark on a roller coaster ride through collanos‘ and tilllate‘s startup anecdotes. It was a great, informative evening with a fine catering (thanks doodlers!), lots of Q&A and it somehow seemed that there was a good load of empathy with the sours and sweets and the ups and downs of the two presentators Silvan Mühlemann (Tilllate) and Franco dal Molin (Collanos). And this is how it looked…

knock, knock…

Tilllate‘s Silvan Muehlemann giving his preso

Franco Dal Molin from Collanos presenting his emotion-o-meter, the new Web Monday classic ;)

Hockey Boys

November 24, 2008

It’s already 5 days since Sun’s Patrick Liechti  took us out for a game of ice hockey between Switzerland’s ZSC lions and Swedens Linköpings HC. High time to say thank you – Patrick for the tickets, Peter for the introduction into the most basic hockey rules (ice hockey = 3×20 minutes) and Luzius for reminding me to buy that train ticket!

Thank you very much!

German news site Spiegel Online just released an article about German’s and their voluntary work. There has been a massive study by the research company Prognos, which conducted 44,000 interviews and went through the data of 439 administrative districts all over Germany. The results are: younger people are active more often than the elderly, people in the country do more voluntary work than those in the city. This might be related to stronger family values and the persisting influence of the church. The vast majority of those who do voluntary work are active in sports clubs, the fire department, youth related work or churches.

We are not sure if everything has been taken into account, for example online voluntary work like that on Amazee. But it is quite impressive to see the numbers. The labor value of voluntary work in Germany sums up to 35 billion Euro a month, which is about 44.194.500.000 US$. An important factor in this trend is also the retreat of the state out of the social sector.

All in all, 34% of the population are working voluntarily, their workforce clocking in at an average 16,2 hours per month. We say: Keep it up! To read the whole article (which is in German), click here.

Greg always wanted me to post something to celebrate Amazee.com’s Google PageRank of 6… so here we go:

Maybe PageRank starts singing for your Amazee projects in the future as well!
